The Great Canoe Race connects the festival and Switzerland County?s lifelong partner - the Ohio River which brought both settlers and economic prosperity to the valley nearly 200 years ago. The moving giant, whose personality can fluctuate between serenity and rage, flanks the entire southern border of Switzerland County to earn Vevay the title of one of Midwest's oldest river towns.

The race, scheduled for Sunday at 12:30 p.m., features four different divisions with prizes going to the top finishers in each category.

The fourth race, part of the Open Class Division, demands considerably more endurance and time. Canoeists must row the entire distance of the river - from the Indiana to the Kentucky bank, retrieve a flag and then reach the Indiana shore again as quickly as possible.

Three of the four races, which involve a shorter distance, cater exclusively to seniors, women and youth. In these competitions, participants paddle out to a buoy in the Ohio River, round the marker and then return to the Indiana shore. The top two teams in each of these divisions receive a prize.
